Active Eats Booth at 2019 Epcot Food & Wine Festival
*This gluten free dining experience took place in September 2019. It includes notes about dairy free modifications, as well as vegetarian, and vegan options.
For Food & Wine Festival Gluten Free marketplace booth options, be sure to click over to the marketplace booth page for more info.
Active Eats, located this year in Future World West, first debuted at the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival in 2017. Featuring healthful options, this has been a good go-to gluten free booth the past few years and has included different variations of the Verlasso Salmon dish -- a gluten free festival favorite. I was glad to see the booth return this year to the festival, especially since it now has two gluten friendly options available. *Note: As of 9/24/2019, I have learned that one of these dishes is NOT gluten free and contains gluten. As of 10/2019, Disney has updated the dish to make the Salmon dish gluten free once again.
Because this booth is NOT 100% gluten free, there is always an increased risk of cross-contamination. Use your own judgement when consuming items that are not in dedicated gluten free booths or booths that contain almost all gluten friendly dishes.
The two gluten friendly options available at the Active Eats booth include:
- *Dish has been updated due to gluten in the original dish marked GF. Spice-crusted Verlasso® Salmon with UNCLE BEN’S® Basmati Rice, Lentils, Quinoa, Crushed Avocado and Sherry Vinegar
- Fruit and Nut Energy Snack: House-made mixture of Apricots, Almonds, Pecans, Coconut, Puffed Rice and Chocolate Chips
The salmon is also a must-order for me at this booth, but I was very curious about the fruit and nut energy snack. Our friends at Vegan Disney World had confirmed that not only was this dish gluten free and vegetarian (as marked on the festival passport), but it was also dairy free and vegan.
*Dish has now been updated to be gluten free (after it was mislabeled and contained gluten). The Spice-crusted Verlasso® Salmon with UNCLE BEN’S® Quinoa & Ancient Grains Medley, Crushed Avocado and Sherry Vinegar is marked gluten free on the passport and costs $5.75 and is eligible as a snack credit on the Disney Dining Plan.
Last year's version of this dish contain dairy in the avocado mash. Because we attended the festival the day before Hurricane Dorian was set to affect Central Florida, I did not ask about the avocado and dairy. The festival booths had been adjusted to still operate but weren't operating at full capacity. This meant the booths were a bit busy. However, I will work to double-check these ingredients on a regular festival day. If you're dairy free, do make sure you double-check before consuming.
As always, I really enjoy the salmon dish. It wasn't very spicy and was fairly mild in flavor. The only flavor that was a bit strong was the sherry vinegar in the quinoa and ancient grain medley. My only big complaint with this dish is that it continues to shrink in size. I'd love a slightly larger portion of salmon. As an aside, I did have a stomach ache after eating this and have since learned that the dish contains gluten. The booth has updated the dish so that it is made using gluten free ingredients now after many of us reached out to Disney about the dish containing gluten but being labeled GF.
The Fruit and Nut Energy Snack: House-made mixture of Apricots, Almonds, Pecans, Coconut, Puffed Rice and Chocolate Chips is marked gluten free and vegetarian on the passport and costs $4.00 and is eligible as a snack credit on the Disney Dining Plan. Vegan Disney World also confirmed that it is dairy free and vegan.
Last year, the Active Eats booth had a version of a fruit and nut snack on their menu, but it was not marked gluten free. I was excited to see it marked GF this year. Overall, I really loved this dish. It wasn't very sweet at all -- though the dried fruit and chocolate chips gave a nice hint of sweetness throughout. My only major complaint is that it "melted" very quickly.
The snack came from the refrigerator and was served chilled. But, within mere minutes it started coming apart quickly in the heat. So, I would recommend eating this quickly and indoors if you can. It's not a great dish for holding up to sitting around for a long period of time. That being said, I would totally get this again for a mid-morning or evening snack. If you like granola type bars, you'll enjoy this one. If not, I'd pass.
Overall
*Updated Note from Sarah: I am deeply disappointed that Disney is currently marking a dish gluten free and continuing to serve it as such. However, I'm glad that Disney responded to this error swiftly once notified and have since modified the dish to be gluten free.
I was glad to see two options available to gluten free guests at the Active Eats booth this year. Both were solid options, in my opinion, and were quite tasty. In addition, anytime there's a booth with more than one GF option, the better. Not only does it mean there are more options to try and enjoy, but it also helps reduce the risk of cross-contamination. The Active Eats booth will definitely be a repeat for me this year during the festival.
Have you been to the Active Eats booth? What did you think of the GF options?

Florida Fresh — 2016 Flower & Garden Festival Booth
*This dining experience took place in March 2016.Please note that the Flower & Garden Festival booths have increased risks of cross contamination.Florida Fresh has been an Epcot Flower & Garden Festival staple for several years now. Last year, it had two dishes I didn't try - the Watermelon Salad (I really dislike watermelon) and the shrimp and grits (which contained dairy). This year, they have two items on their menu that are marked gluten free:
- Kale salad with dried cherries, almonds, goat cheese and white balsamic vinaigrette –Vegetarian, Gluten Free, Lactose Free (confirmed lactose free and can be made dairy free by removing cheese by Sarah on March 2, 2016)
- Shrimp and stone ground grits with andouille sausage, sweet corn, tomatoes, and cilantro – Gluten Free
Because I have been introducing some dairy into my diet, I've learned that I can tolerate goat cheese with no issues, and so I decided to get the Kale Salad. I was told that you can easily order the salad without the cheese to make it both dairy free and vegan too.Overall, I really liked this salad. I loved the dried cherries, the crunch of the sliced almonds and the kale. It wasn't overpowering or overly dressed, which was also nice. It was light and refreshing and even those who might not think they'd like it would probably enjoy it. This is a salad I'd definitely get again.I've heard a few people say that the shrimp and grits are also dairy free this year, which seems unlikely, but I will also be stopping by the booth soon to confirm whether or not it contains dairy.Read about the gluten free Epcot Flower & Garden Festival options on my main festival page, and you can also check out Gluten Free in Orlando’s festival page too.Looking for even more fun? Bauernmarkt: Farmer’s Market — 2016 Flower & Garden Festival Booth
*This dining experience took place in March 2016.Please note that the Flower & Garden Festival booths have increased risks of cross contamination. The Bauernmarkt is a new booth for this year's Flower & Garden Festival. They have one item on their menu that is marked gluten free:
- Currywurst with paprika chips – roasted bratwurst with curry ketchup and paprika-spiced chips – Gluten Free, Dairy Free (confirmed dairy free by Sarah on March 2, 2016)
Trying this dish, I will say that I was not a big fan of it. I love condiments, and I also love curry ketchup. But, I was not feeling this one. Plus, it was put on too heavily -- something I never thought I'd say as the condiment queen!I liked the bratwurst but found the ketchup to be overpowering (and I also adore curry). I also thought the paprika chips were overly seasoned.I think my biggest complaint was that the dish was overly sauced, overly seasoned and had too many big bold flavors competing with one another.Props for the super cute Epcot swizzle stick that accompanied the dish but overall, this was not a dish I'd get again. Still, I love that the booth had a gluten free and dairy free option.Read about the gluten free Epcot Flower & Garden Festival options on my main festival page, and you can also check out Gluten Free in Orlando’s festival page too.Looking for even more fun? La Isla Fresca — 2016 Flower & Garden Festival Booth
*This dining experience took place in March 2016.Please note that the Flower & Garden Festival booths have increased risks of cross contamination.La Isla Fresca is a new booth this year to the Epcot Flower & Garden Festival. They have one item on their menu that is marked gluten free:
- Jerk-spice grouper or chicken with mango salsa, chayote and green papaya slaw with lime-cilantro vinaigrette – Gluten Free, Dairy Free (confirmed dairy free by Sarah on March 2, 2016)
I was excited about this dish, as I love spicy food, and I love fish. I also liked that they offered the option of chicken or grouper. I've now tried both the chicken and grouper.I will say that the fish I've had here was a bit overcooked but overall really delicious. I loved the mango salsa and even really enjoyed the slaw. I found it to be light and refreshing! A great choice. It also wasn't overly spicy, so if you think it might be too spicy, you might be surprised to find it a bit mild. The chicken was also a good option and great for those that do not like fish. It was a bit on the tough side, but I liked that it was boneless chicken, which made it easier to cut and eat. Overall, I prefer the combination of grouper with the accompaniments, but both the chicken and fish are great options. This is definitely a dish I will get again at the festival!Read about the gluten free Epcot Flower & Garden Festival options on my main festival page, and you can also check out Gluten Free in Orlando’s festival page too.Looking for even more fun? Urban Farm Eats -- 2014 Flower & Garden Festival Booth
*This review took place in March 2014.Please note that the Flower & Garden Festival booths have increased risks of cross contamination. The booth I was looking forward to the most at this year’s Flower & Garden Festival was the Urban Farm Eats booth. When I first read the food offerings, I had a suspicion that this booth would be gluten free friendly. So I wasn’t surprised when I read that all of the food offerings at Urban Farms Eats were gluten free. Yippee! This meant less chance of cross contamination. The options served at the booth also sounded really intriguing, so I was looking forward to finding out if at least one of these was dairy free too. When I got to the booth, I noticed a chef was on hand (and I went early, close to the both openings at 11 a.m.). The cast member at the cash register referred me to Chef Scott who helped me out. He said the only dish that contained dairy was the beet salad. This made me even happier about this booth. That meant that I could eat two of the three dishes (and technically, I could probably order the salad without the goat cheese cream).I decided to go for it and try both dishes – the Land grown eggplant "scallop" with romesco sauce and spaghetti squash and the Ghost pepper dusted tilapia with winter melon slaw and mint oil. First up is the land grown eggplant "scallop." So, yeah. The name. I get it's a play on words and food making the eggplant look like scallop. But honestly, I don't think we need this gimmick at the festival. How about some really fabulous grilled eggplant cooked and seasoned really well? This, I'm sad to say was not really great.I liked the romesco sauce well enough - I like roasted red peppers. The sauce wasn't super flavorful though. And the spaghetti squash? Um...bland bland and bland. And don't get me wrong. I know spaghetti squash can be a bit blah-zo when it comes to flavor but salt would have helped. And I LOVE spaghetti squash by the way! Both of those accompaniments were fine relatively speaking but it was the eggplant "scallop" that really ruined it for me. The texture was the eggplant was so mushy and off (I believe one family member said it had the texture of oysters...um, YUCK). Again, I like this vegetable, I just thinking it could have been better highlighted by a different cooking preparation. If your family is already on the fence about eggplant, this really is not the dish to try!The ghost pepper dusted tilapia fared better in my mind. I will say that if you are scared of spicy food this actually isn't as bad as it sounds (ghost pepper is one of the hottest peppers in the world). They definitely used the pepper sparingly. But it is spicy (have some water handy). I thought the curry I had last year at the Singapore booth at Food & Wine was infinitely spicier!I think my favorite thing was the winter melon slaw. It had fresh ginger in it and was super fresh and light. The mint oil seemed like a nice accompaniment...if I could have tasted it! Is it weird I want to go back and just get the winter melon slaw?!The booth also features Redbridge gluten free beer (not really my favorite but glad it's an option) and several vegan wines.I would say overall, I'm glad that this booth is there, and that they had some different gluten free & dairy free offerings. I also felt a lot more comfortable consuming something from this booth. For more Flower & Garden Festival info, check out my main festival page, as well as the reviews found on Gluten Free in Orlando's website. Jardin de Fiestas -- 2014 Flower & Garden Festival Booth
*This review took place in March 2014. Please note that the Flower & Garden Festival booths have increased risks of cross contamination. The Flower & Garden Festival offers a lot of great food offerings, and I was glad to see that one offering at the Jardin de Fiestas booth was "gluten free" this year.I admit, that I was pretty nervous about eating here because the other food option there is a flour tortilla. I just had visions of them cooking the items on the same griddle. YIKES!I decided to visit the booth early, at opening, figuring this would be the most optimal time to get the safest version of the gluten free dish, which was the Taco al Pastor. As you can see from the menu, it had a lot of great components to it. Grilled pineapple? I'm in!When I got to the booth, I did check with the cast member to see if the item had dairy. After some behind the scenes checking, they said yes, there was no dairy in this dish. Once I paid, I went over to the pick-up station and watched as they made my dish. I made sure it didn't involve the use of the same griddle. One I got my taco, I had to take a pretty picture before I dove in (which I wanted to do immediately!)As you can see, it looked pretty tasty! Taste-wise, I have to say this was my favorite thing from the day. Bright and fresh flavors really made this dish standout. I loved the pineapple in it too. So amazingly delicious. The pork was well-seasoned and cooked too.My only cons? The size and cost. This was $5.50. YIKES! And seriously, I think I ate it in 4 bites. I'm not joking! If it had been two tacos, I probably would have been much happier. If you are going to eat at this booth, I urge you to be cautious. I honestly could see this booth getting crazy busy at the end of the day and the booth griddling not being as strict as it was in the morning. That being said, I would absolutely stop by again and get that taco. So delicious! For more Flower & Garden Festival info, check out my main festival page, as well as the reviews found on Gluten Free in Orlando's website. Flower & Garden Festival Announces Menus for Outdoor Kitchens
Last year Disney launched a marketplace area in the World Showcase (similar to the Food & Wine Festival) during the Flower & Garden Festival. Like the Food & Wine Festival, the marketplace booths didn't have many gluten free & dairy free friendly offerings. They did, however, carry one of my favorite gluten free beers -- New Planet's Raspberry Ale. Alas, New Planet won't be there this year but there are some vegan wines making an appearance at the booths, called the Outdoor Kitchens. Here is a list of the current offerings as released by Disney for the Outdoor Kitchens (*Note: At this time, no items have been confirmed gluten free or even special diets friendly. As always, these booths carry a higher risk of cross contamination)Stay tuned as I find out if any of these items will be suitable for special dietary needs.
