Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Dinner Review

Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater, located in Disney's Hollywood Studios, has to be one of our favorites for an affordable and unique table service option in the parks. We eat there fairly frequently, and it's a popular choice with our friends and family too. Recently, we had dinner at Sci-Fi Dine-In with one of our friends who was celebrating his birthday. This was his request for a dinner at Disney, and we were happy to help him celebrate at this restaurant.

*This gluten free dining experience took place in January 2020. It includes information about dairy free options, as well as a review of fish/shellfish free, peanut free, cabbage free, hazelnut free, and chicken & turkey free options.

Atmosphere

We've probably posted ad nauseam about the theme of Sci-Fi Dine-In, so while I won't go into a lot of detail, I still wanted to highlight how cool this restaurant is.

I recently got the iPhone 11 Pro, and it's the first camera I've ever owned that takes photos that does this restaurant justice. As you can see from all of the photos, the exterior and interior are brightly lit, colorful, and just plain fun!

The inside of the restaurant can be seriously dark. But, that doesn't stop the restaurant from including brightly colored cars that serve as your tables and other cool details.

One of our favorite places to sit is actually the back of the restaurant in the "Flying Saucers." These tables are pretty nifty, and if you're concerned about lighting, they actually have a lot more lighting available too. I've got a few photos of the flying saucers in my previous review. And, you'll see me at our table during this dining experience at the end of this review.

The Food

Like most restaurants owned and operated by the Disney Company, Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater does have an allergy-friendly lunch and dinner menu. Of course, you can always ask to speak with a chef directly to discuss options, which we always do when we dine here.

On this visit, we did chat with the chef there and somehow I forgot to write down her name. That's a shame because she was phenomenal and deserves to be shouted out. Brandon and I are both always so impressed with the chefs at Sci-Fi Dine-In, because they do always go above and beyond to help ensure we have lots of options and a safe meal.

On this visit, we asked lots of questions because we were interested in a few different options not marked gluten free on the allergy-friendly menu. But, first, we asked the chef if we could get a basket of French fries for the table to start with some dipping sauces. We did this on a previous visit, and it was a great way to start the meal.

Sci-Fi Dine-In / Photo Taken by Gluten Free & Dairy Free at WDW

Somehow I forgot to take a photo of the basket of fries we got made from a dedicated fryer. They were gluten free, dairy free, fish/shellfish free, peanut free, tree nut free, chicken & turkey free.

Do always ask about the fryers at Sci-Fi because they do have a vegan fryer and a gluten free fryer to help out with options. We like this a lot because anytime a location serves allergy-friendly chicken tenders, Brandon often can't have the fries because they only have one type of allergy-friendly fryer. So, always ask if you're not sure!

The reason I think I forgot to take a photo is because of the EPIC plate of dipping sauces we were served. Many of you know I love a dipping sauce, and I mentioned this to the chef. She brought out so many gluten free dipping sauces that I couldn't eat keep them straight!

While many of them did have dairy in them, there were some (like BBQ and Honey Mustard) which were dairy free. One of the sauces did contain gluten free tamari, and while I did trust the chef to know ingredients, I did actually skip this sauce. Overall, all of the sauces were fantastic, and I especially loved the horseradish dipping sauce, blue cheese dipping sauce, chipotle mayonnaise. Our friend said the sauce with the GF tamari was fantastic but spicy.

For my entree, I tried something completely different. I asked the chef if they could make the Appetizer Sampler which normally comes with fried pickles which are not gluten free. The chef said that she could make everything else gluten free (the allergy-friendly chicken tenders, shrimp and crab fondue) and that she'd swap out the pickles for more French Fries.

If you can have dairy, this was such a fantastic, fun, and different meal at Sci-Fi. I wouldn't do it every time, as I was completely and utterly stuffed (and couldn't finish it). The shrimp and crab fondue is an appetizer I've been dying to try. It was a little on the fishy side but not bad. I'd definitely get it again because it went great with the freshly fried tortilla chips.

The allergy-friendly chicken tenders were served without sauce so that I could use the dipping sauces we already had at the table. This was perfect, because I found the buffalo sauce (that they're normally served with) to be almost too spicy for my personal taste. Plus, who doesn't want to dip allergy-friendly chicken tenders in lots of different sauces?!

For Brandon's entree, he ordered a Bacon Cheeseburger with French Fries. This dish was safe for fish/shellfish, peanut, hazelnut, cabbage, and chicken & turkey allergies. It can also be made gluten free by swapping out the bun and dairy free by omitting the cheese.

Brandon always raves about the burgers here, and I can second that they do a great job with the burger options. Of course, we both absolutely love the steak fries at Sci-Fi Dine-In. I'm not sure what they do there, but they fry them super well!

As if we hadn't already had a ton of food, I got roped into ordering the gluten free and vegan cookie milkshake. The chef mentioned I should get it in a to-go cup because you get more when you do that. She was not kidding! My to-go cup was stuff to the brim with a house-made coconut whipped topping, non-dairy ice cream, chocolate syrup, and non-dairy ice cream. It's definitely a favorite of mine, and I love that I can get a gluten free & dairy free milkshake there with no issues.

If this photo is any indication, I was stuffed but making a solid effort to try to drink my milkshake!

Overall

For us, Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater continues to be a favorite. We loved the fun, relaxed vibe, and we absolutely love the affordable and approachable gluten free and food allergy friendly options. Add in lots of great chef interactions and the ability to customize dishes, and you have one out-of-this-world restaurant!

Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Dinner Review

Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater, located in Disney's Hollywood Studios, is a table service restaurant that's our go-to spot to dine in DHS. Recently, we had two unplanned dinners at Sci-Fi Dine-In due to challenges with quick service restaurants in the parks either not being open or being unable to accommodate some of our special dietary needs. Of course, both Brandon and I really enjoy Sci-Fi Dine-In, so we're always up for a meal there.

*This gluten free dining experience took place in September 2019 and includes information about gluten free and dairy free options, as well as options for fish/shellfish, peanut, and chicken & turkey allergies.

Atmosphere

Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater is set to resemble a 1950s drive-in. Because Hollywood Studios used to have more of the TV and film set theme, Sci-Fi Dine-In acts as a restaurant / working set. I always enjoy looking around at the "behind the scenes" props as you walk to the main restaurant area.

Even the exterior of Sci-Fi Dine-In has a fun and retro vibe. It's especially fun at night, when the restaurant signs are lit up like a old drive-in signs.

Inside the main dining room, the fun continues. That's because you're actually seated tables that look like vintage cars. Your server is your "car hop," throughout your meal too.

While you're dining, you'll enjoy some nostalgic and charming videos that include retro drive-in theater ads and 1950s Sci-Fi film clips. It's always a highlight of our meal experience at Sci-Fi Dine-In.

In addition to the drive-in car tables, you will also find several "flying saucer" tables in the back of the restaurant. These are often reserved for walk-ups (i.e. guests without dining reservations). Because we did not have reservations on our last two visits, we were seated in the flying saucers.

And, believe it or not, we actually prefer these tables. That's because they are more brightly lit, and they're a bit more removed from the main dining area. We really enjoy the more relaxed atmosphere in the flying saucer seating area.

The Food

Like most Disney-owned restaurants, Sci-Fi Dine-In does offer guests with special dietary needs an allergy-friendly lunch and dinner menu. You can also speak directly with a chef about options, as well. If you have special dietary needs not covered by the allergy-friendly menus, we always recommend speaking directly with a chef too.

On our last two visits, we spoke with Chef JR, who was really great at talking through the various options. Because of Brandon's chicken & turkey allergies, we always double-check on allergy-friendly fryers. Locations like Backlot Express, for example, have a dedicated allergy-friendly fryer but fries allergy-friendly chicken tenders in them -- making them not safe for Brandon. Sci-Fi Dine-In has not only an allergy-friendly fryer, but they also have a vegan fryer too. This means that Brandon can get safe fries whenever we dine there.

I've had quite a few blog readers ask about the paper straws that Disney is now using in their restaurants as there has been some discussion about gluten in paper straws. Disney's official website has noted that any Disney-owned locations, like Sci-Fi Dine-In, currently use the Aardvark brand paper straws and that they are 100% paper.

That being said, from a personal perspective, I'm not a huge fan of the paper straws because they tend to disintegrate pretty quickly. There are lots of options though for reusable straws for purchase too online, if you're not a fan of these type of straws.

On our first visit, I ordered the Oven-roasted Turkey Wrap. It is marked safe for gluten/wheat, fish/shellfish, milk, and peanut/tree nut allergies on the allergy-friendly menu.

The turkey wrap comes with Oven-roasted Turkey, Crispy Bacon, Lettuce, and Vine-ripened Tomato with Cilantro-Avocado Aioli on an Allergy-Friendly Wrap and French Fries. This has become a big favorite of mine whenever we dine at Sci-Fi Dine-In. Not only is it fairly reasonably priced, but it's very filling too. And, of course, it's also very tasty. I do really love the cilantro-avocado aioli that comes in the sandwich. So good! If you like turkey sandwiches, this is one I can highly recommend.

Sci-Fi Dine-In / Photo Taken by Gluten Free & Dairy Free at WDW

Sci-Fi Dine-In / Photo Taken by Gluten Free & Dairy Free at WDW

On our second visit, I decided I needed to try something new. I've had quite a few burgers at the restaurant, so I thought I'd check out the Buffalo Chicken Salad -- minus the Buffalo Sauce. This is marked safe for gluten/wheat, fish/shellfish, and peanut/tree nut allergies.

This salad typically comes with Allergy-Friendly Chicken Tenders tossed in a Spicy Buffalo Sauce with Mixed Greens, Bacon, Tomato, Red Onion, Cucumber, Shredded Cheddar, and Fried Tortilla Strips with Cilantro-Ranch Dressing. Now, I love a good condiment, but for some reason buffalo sauce is one of the few sauces I'm not a fan of. So, I asked Chef JR to omit the buffalo sauce from this salad.

Overall, I really liked the salad. It wasn't anything fancy. And, I would have liked to have seen a variety of mixed greens instead of just iceberg lettuce. My only other major complaint was that it came with 3 allergy-friendly chicken tenders, which seemed a little on the small side. But, overall, the salad was really tasty.

The salad came pre-dressed in the Cilantro-Ranch Dressing, but Chef JR added another cup of dressing on the side. I used a bit more of it, because the dressing was really good. But, the salad was fairly well-dressed overall. I'd definitely get this again if I wasn't super hungry or just wanted a simple salad.

Sci-Fi Dine-In - Vegan Cookie Milkshake

Sci-Fi Dine-In / Photo Taken by Gluten Free & Dairy Free at WDW

On our second visit, I also asked Chef JR about the Vegan Cookie Milkshake. It's not listed on the allergy-friendly menu. But, blog reader Sarah C. had raved about it when we saw her family at the restaurant a few weeks ago. Chef JR confirmed that the milkshake was also gluten free, dairy free, and vegan and was made with Enjoy Life Foods Crunchy Chocolate Chip Cookies. The shake is also made currently with non-dairy milk (I believe either soy or rice) and a house-made coconut milk whipped cream.

This was such a good milkshake, and I was so glad that I ordered it! The house-made coconut milk whipped cream was really yummy. But, the best part was the shake itself. Not only did it have crumbled cookies and a whole cookie on top, but it also had cookies blended in the milkshake itself. This is definitely going to be a must-order for me the next time we have dinner at Sci-Fi Dine-In again. It was that good!

Sci-Fi Dine-In - Steak

Sci-Fi Dine-In / Photo Taken by Gluten Free & Dairy Free at WDW

On our first visit, Brandon ordered the Flame-broiled New York Strip Steak with Roasted Potatoes, Seasonal Vegetables that included Asparagus and Blistered Tomatoes. This is marked safe for gluten/wheat, egg, fish/shellfish, milk, and peanut/tree nut allergies.

Brandon absolutely loves this steak and the roasted potatoes that come with it. He's not a big fan of vegetables like asparagus. So, next time, he said he's just ask for a double-serving of potatoes instead. But, overall, this is a winner if you're a steak lover.

Sci-Fi Dine-In / Photo Taken by Gluten Free & Dairy Free at WDW

On our second visit, Brandon ordered a Bacon Cheeseburger. This also included grilled onions too. He was also able to get French Fries from the vegan fryer. This entree is safe for fish/shellfish, peanut, and chicken & turkey allergies.

Brandon and I both enjoy the burgers at Sci-Fi Dine-In, and he said this one was excellent. He also loves the steak fries that the restaurant serves. And, we both agree that they do a really good job frying the steak fries at Sci-Fi Dine-In. We've had that at some other Disney restaurants and been less than impressed with the cook on the fries.

Sci-Fi Dine-In / Photo Taken by Gluten Free & Dairy Free at WDW

Sci-Fi Dine-In / Photo Taken by Gluten Free & Dairy Free at WDW

Brandon also ordered a Hot Fudge Sundae on both visits. We both agree that it's hard not to order milkshakes or dessert when we eat at Sci-Fi Dine-In! The sundae is marked safe for gluten/wheat, egg, fish/shellfish, and peanut/tree nut allergies.

This is definitely a good go-to dessert if you want something that is simple, yet delicious. Brandon did want to get the brownie sundae on our most recent visit, but Chef JR noted that the brownie has a cross-contamination risk with peanuts. So, we didn't want to risk it. That being said, Brandon said the sundae was just as good as the one he had on the previous visit.

Overall

We both can't say enough good things about Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater in Disney's Hollywood Studios. Not only have we found a lot of options that we really enjoy, but the chefs at the restaurant have been super accommodating and helpful. We also really appreciate that this table service is relatively affordable compared to some of the other TS locations in the parks and resorts. Add in a great restaurant theme, and you have an terrific option for a delicious, safe, and fun meal in Hollywood Studios.

Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant, located in Hollywood Studios, is one of those quirky and unique restaurants at Disney World that I absolutely love. On this recent visit, Brandon and I decided to go to Sci-Fi Dine-In for dinner last minute so that we could enjoy the holiday decorations and shows at the park. We did not have a reservation, so we were very lucky that we were able to do a walk-up for dinner that evening.

Atmosphere

Sci-Fi Dine-In is inspired by classic 1950s drive-in theaters. That means inside the restaurant, you'll find a giant movie screen that shows retro sci-fi movie clips and commercials along with a set that looks like an actual drive-in.

On this particular visit, we were seated at one of the "flying saucers" in the back of the restaurant. These are picnic table style seating areas that are often reserved for small parties or for those who have walk-up reservations. This was actually the first time we've ever been seated in this area, and we actually liked it a lot. We were able to talk a bit more and the lighting was so much better.

The only downside is that most of the chairs at these tables do not have backs. So, if you have back problems or just don't like seating without backs to them, you may want to avoid this seating area. We both agreed we would sit there again though.

The Food

Like most Disney restaurants, Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant does carry an allergy-friendly lunch and dinner menu. I do encourage you to speak with a chef at this location if you have any questions or don't see options available for your special dietary need. For instance, you can get a gluten free, dairy free, and vegan milkshake if you ask. But, it's not listed on the allergy-friendly menu.

On this visit, I debated between a few options, as there were quite a few gluten free dishes that I was interested in.

Sci-Fi Dine In / Photo Taken by Gluten Free & Dairy Free at WDW

Sci-Fi Dine In / Photo Taken by Gluten Free & Dairy Free at WDW

I ended up ordering the Oven-roasted Turkey Wrap with Oven-roasted Turkey, Crispy Bacon, Lettuce, and Vine-ripened Tomato with Cilantro-Avocado Aioli on an Allergy-Friendly Wrap. This is listed on the menu as being safe for Gluten/Wheat, Fish/Shellfish, Milk, and Peanut/Tree Nut Allergies.

At first, I was a little dubious about how tasty this sandwich would be when I saw the gluten free wrap was a standard rice flour wrap that I've had before. I'm not usually a big fan of these, but the restaurant did a good job of heating the wrap tortilla up. The sandwich itself was quite tasty, and I really enjoyed the flavors. I ended up somehow missing the bacon but only realized that after we left the restaurant. My favorite part of the sandwich was the cilantro-avocado aioli. I only wish there would have been a bit more on the sandwich.

The best part of this entrée may have been the French fries. Both Brandon and I were just wowed by the fries that night. They were super crisp and very well seasoned. I'm not usually a big steak fry fan. But, they cooked them a little more on the well-done side, so I really enjoyed them a lot.

Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater / Photo Taken by Gluten Free & Dairy Free at WDW

For dessert, I ordered the gluten free brownie. It is the OMG It's Gluten Free brand and does contain dairy. I did ask if I could get vanilla Tofutti and Hershey's chocolate syrup with this, as it normally comes with vanilla ice cream and hot fudge. Even though I do eat dairy now, ice cream is just a little too much for me. So, I always ask for dairy free ice cream when possible.

The brownie was nicely heated, and the Tofutti and chocolate syrup were the perfect toppings for this. I would definitely get this again, although I really do love their gluten free, dairy free, and vegan milkshakes too.

Overall

Both Brandon and I really enjoyed our meals at Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant. We both thought the food was excellent when we went and our service was fantastic too. Shout-out to our server Vanessa who was seriously one of the best servers we've had at Disney in a while. For reasonable prices, good food, and a fun atmosphere, we'll definitely continue to have Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant on our short list of fun, affordable restaurants at Disney.

Star Wars Character Breakfast at Sci-Fi Dine-In 2015 — Table Service — Hollywood Studios

*This dining experience took place in May 2015.Note: The Star Wars™ Dine-In Galactic Breakfast is a special character dining experience that took place during the 2015 Star Wars™ Weekends.Sci Fi Galactic Dine In ScreenLast year, Star Wars™ Weekends at Disney's Hollywood Studios offered several new meal experiences: Star Wars™ Dine-In Galactic Breakfast and Jedi Mickey’s Star Wars™ Dine at Hollywood and Vine. I dined at both locations and had a great time, especially at the Star Wars™ Dine-In Galactic Breakfast at Sci-Fi Dine In! For the 2015 Star Wars™ Weekends, we decided to make reservations for the Sci-Fi Dine-In Galactic breakfast for the first Star Wars™ Weekend. We were excited to get into the weekend spirit with a terrific early morning breakfast. Before we arrived, we made sure to get our ride on. Nothing says Star Wars™ Weekends like an 8 a.m. ride on Star Tours! After our flight to Endor, we headed to the Sci-Fi Dine-In. The check-in area was busy, but we only had a short wait (about 10 minutes or "light speed" in Star Wars-speak) before we were moved to the photo line. The Star Wars™ Dine-In Galactic Breakfast is pricey $49.99 per person (for adults) and $31.99 per child (under 9), but we found that for a once a year experience to us, it was worth it. First up, before you get seated, you get moved to a photo opportunity with Boba Fett and Darth Vader (who are not walking around the dining area). Last year this photo opportunity was included with your dining experience; however, as I later learned -- this year it was not. That was a bummer because if I had known I would have asked to have the Photopass photographer take a photo on my iPhone. Boba Fett and Darth Vader really got into character and before you knew it, Boba Fett was pushing you out of the way...Puts a whole new meaning to the Star Wars quote "Move along, nothing to see here." Sci-Fi Dine is set to resemble an old drive-in, so you get to sit in "cars." I love the atmosphere and the big screen showing Star Wars™film clips is really fun! They even showed previews from the latest Star Wars™film coming out in December 2015. Sci Fi Dine In Gluten Free MenuAfter being seated, I was presented with a gluten free and nut free menu for breakfast. Because I am also dairy free, the server said they would get the chef to go over options. The breakfast was very similar to last year's offerings, so I had a good sense of what might be available. I didn't ask about the waffles, but last year they were Van's gluten free waffles, not the allergy Mickey waffles I adore. If you're curious about where to find allergy Mickey waffles at Disney, check out my Allergy Mickey waffles location guideSci Fi Dine In Gluten Free MenuI decided to order the Tatooine Sunrise, which is what I ordered last year. However, I subbed out the regular scrambled eggs with the eggs, crab and asparagus from the Dune Sea entree. I also asked for a side of the paprika dusted shrimp from the shrimp & grits entree, which I got last year (and were delicious). You can read the full gluten free and nut free menu offerings at Sci-Fi Dine In Galactic Breakfast on the menu page (including the kids menu).Sci Fi Dine InWhile waiting for our first course, which was breakfast pastries, we took in the sights and sounds of the Sci-Fi Dine In! And of course, several characters including Storm Troopers, Jawas, and Greedo were wandering about throughout the meal to take photos, sign autographs, and (in the case of those pesky Jawas) trading shiny things! Star Wars Weekends Sci FiThe breakfast at the Star Wars™ Dine-In Galactic Breakfast is a la carte with several courses brought to your table. Up first is a pastry course. I was served three items:

I was brought the plate before the chef could explain, so make sure to ask if you are unsure about products. As a side note, it's really dark in Sci-Fi Dine In, so as a part of your meal, you get a light saber glo stick! Of course, photos require a lot of flash, so be prepared. Sci Fi Breakfast PastriesThe next course served is fruit or a yogurt parfait. Since yogurt is out for me, the only dairy free option is fresh fruit. Last year, they offered a fruit bowl that was almost entirely melon. Sure, the Melon shaped Yoda head was adorable but melon is not my personal favorite. In fact, it's my least favorite fruit. I asked if I could get mixed fruit or strawberries and was brought a fresh bowl of strawberries for my fruit option. Fruit Sci Fi Dine In BreakfastWhile we were waiting for our entree, our friends the Jawas decided to make an appearance (they stopped by twice at our table; they knew a good trading group when they found it). Jawas like shiny things (last year, they brought me a spoon... because well, it's shiny!) and they loveStar Wars™ inspired items. Case in point, last year we traded Star Wars™Magic Band decor. This year, it was all about pin trading, and the first round we got a Phineas & Ferb pin, which got later traded for a Star Wars™ coin/medallion. Remember folks, there's no harm in trying to trade up with the Jawas. Jawas Sci Fi BreakfastMy entree and side dish arrived, and good thing -- I was as hungry as a Wookie. The bacon and sausage were delicious (no stringy Disney bacon there!) and the roasted potatoes with garlic were just as delicious as the year before. The crab and asparagus scrambled eggs were yummy, and something I'd definitely get again. And the shrimp was equally delicious. Sci-Fi Dine In BreakfastThroughout the meal, we took photo breaks with Greedo and the Storm Troopers. Though, I had to keep telling the Storm Troopers that my breakfast was "not the breakfast they were looking for." Those silly Storm Troopers never learned...Sci Fi Galactic BreakfastGreedo Sci Fi Dine InLast year's breakfast ended with a special dessert, which was not included at this year's breakfast. I don't think any of us missed it, as we were all pretty much feeling like Jaba the Hutt after our breakfast. We definitely did not go hungry.Overall, my family loves this special breakfast experience at Sci-Fi Dine In during Star Wars™ Weekends. It's one we'll continue to go to every year because we had so much fun! I was pleased to see the new gluten free and nut free menu this year and hope they continue to improve the offerings each year! If you want to read more about the breakfast and see other photos, check out the Disney Food Blog for non-special diets related info from last yearHave you been to the Star Wars™ Dine-In Galactic Breakfast? Star Wars Character Breakfast at Sci-Fi Dine-In 2014 -- Table Service -- Hollywood Studios

*This dining experience took place in June 2014.Note: The Star Wars™ Dine-In Galactic Breakfast is a special character dining experience that took place during the 2014 Star Wars™ Weekends.Star Wars Galactic Dine-InThis year's Star Wars™ Weekends offered several new meal experiences: Star Wars™ Dine-In Galactic Breakfast and Jedi Mickey’s Star Wars™ Dine at Hollywood and Vine. Of course, as soon as I heard the announcement about these two meals, I had to make sure to go to both of them. They sounded like awesome events and as a Star Wars™ fan, they were totally up my alley. My family and I attended the Jedi Mickey’s Star Wars™ Dine at Hollywood and Vine during the first Star Wars™ Weekends in May and had a great time. I was pleased to see the special diets offerings available and really enjoyed the experience. We had heard tons of buzz about the character breakfast at Sci-Fi Dine In and were really excited to check it out! First up, I have to say that this was a very popular breakfast. When we got there during our visit at 8:30 a.m. it was pretty packed. Our reservation wasn't until 9:10 a.m. but we checked in and figured we'd just hang out and take in the atmosphere (we'd already rode Star Tours at 8 a.m. so bonus for us. Nothing says Star Wars™ Weekends like riding Star Tours early on in the day!). Imagine our surprise when we got called about 10 minutes later. Talk about going light speed to our breakfast! Before our breakfast, we took a minute to pose with Darth Vader and Boba Fett. My family were wearing Rebel Spy t-shirts which did NOT make Darth Vader happy. And Boba Fett decided he wasn't too thrilled with me either. The reactions they gave us were priceless. Then it was off to the Sci-Fi Dine In dining area where we took in the sights and transformation which suited the character meal really well. Sci-Fi Dine In Star Wars WeekendsOn the screen, you got to watch Star Wars clips and even the special 1978 Christmas Special. Talk about awesome and corny all at the same time.  Our server greeted us and the very first thing she asked was, "Does anybody have an allergy or special dietary need." This was great because they made sure to ask right away. She took our drink orders and then got the chef while we looked over the menus and check out our surroundings.Sci Fi Dine InBreakfast is a fixed price and includes a plate of breakfast pastries per guest, a choice of fruit & yogurt with granola or just fruit, an entree, and drinks of your choice. There's also a special dessert surprise, but more on that later...The chef greeted me with a plate of breakfast pastries knowing that I couldn't have gluten or dairy. I have to say, it's really hard to see what you're getting on your plate, so taking a picture was about the only way I could identify my treats. I got an Udi's blueberry muffin and chocolate chip muffin, and a Kinnikinnick cinnamon sugar donut. All things I really enjoy! Breakfast Pastries at Sci Fi Dine In during Star Wars WeekendsI was also served fresh fruit with some cute Star Wars inspired cut-outs. Yoda as melon...adorable! If your'e like me and not a melon fan...beware. The fruit salad is mostly honeydew and other melons. Not really my most favorite. I could go for grapes, pineapple and strawberries, but as with most fruit cups, they weren't too plentiful. Fruit Salad at Sci-Fi Dine In during Star Wars WeekendsAnother great feature of the clips is that they show Star Wars™ Weekends specific things, like weekend host James Arnold Taylor and even information about characters walking around. It was all perfectly themed, and I have to say really made the meal experience feel special. Sci Fi Dine In during Star Wars WeekendsFor my entree, I ordered the Tatooine Sunrise which included bacon, sausage (which I exchanged for extra bacon), scrambled eggs, and breakfast potatoes. The potatoes that normally come with it contain dairy, so I was given garlic roasted fingerling potatoes. And they were delicious! Very well seasoned and cooked. The rest of the meal was good. I wouldn't say anything special but well cooked and hearty. Enough to feed a Wookie, that's for sure. Tatooine Sunrise at Sci Fi Dine In during Star Wars WeekendsAnd speaking of more food...I asked if there were any other options available to me for gluten free and dairy free breakfast. They did carry Van's waffles, which I opted to skip. I like Van's but they aren't the same as my beloved allergy Mickey waffles. I did however, order a side of the shrimp that accompanies the shrimp and grits. And these were a yummy and delicious add on to my meal!  Side of Shrimp at Sci Fi Dine in during Star Wars WeekendsThroughout our meal, we were treated to Star Wars™ music and film clips and also got to meet lots of Star Wars™ characters. One caveat, lighting in Sci-Fi Dine In can be a challenge. My mom got a shot of me and Greedo but the flash wasn't on. The photo turned out pretty dark, which I had originally posted here, but thanks to reader Ron G., who worked some Disney pixie dust on it, it looks awesome! (Thanks, Ron!!)Sarah with Greedo at Sci Fi Dine In Star Wars WeekendsStormtroopers were around a lot. As I said quite frequently to them, "This is not the breakfast you are looking for!" Of course, they really got into things and lots of stormtrooper hijinks ensued!  Stormtrooper at Sci Fi Dine In during Star Wars WeekendsOnce we finished our meal, we were also treated to a special dessert. Another nice touch was that this cast member also asked about special dietary needs. Unfortunately, the dessert contained dairy (but it was gluten free!). I was able to get a bowl of fresh strawberries. My family did like the dessert, it seems like it was a pudding/custard of some type with pop rock type fruit in them. Talk about a galactic treat!  Sci Fi Dine In Dessert Surprise during Star Wars WeekendsJawas sign at Sci Fi Dine In during Star Wars WeekendsPerhaps my most favorite thing about the character breakfast were the Jawas. Omigosh. Were these guys adorable! They roamed the character breakfast and yes, if you had something shiny and interesting, they were into trading with you. My family decided to see what would entice the Jawas and they sure do like Star Wars™ bling. My stepdad traded them a Magic Band Star Wars™ gadget, and they were pretty thrilled. Jawa at Sci Fi Dine in during Star Wars WeekendsOne thing is that they don't talk, and you have to translate what they say by their gestures. It took me entirely too long to figure out this Jawa needed to go get the other Jawa's trading pouch. Yep, clearly I needed C3P0 because I do not speak Jawa! When they returned, they made the trade (a shiny limited edition cast member pin) and a spoon. Because apparently, I needed a spoon. Thanks Jawas!  Spoon from the Jawas at Sci Fi Dine In During Star Wars WeekendsOverall, I had a fabulous time at the breakfast. In fact, the whole family thought out of the two character meals this was by far and away our favorite. It wasn't cheap by any means at nearly $50 but for a once a year experience, we would definitely do it again. It had nice gluten free and dairy free meal options, and the food was quite good too. I give this Star Wars™ character meal a solid 8 out of 10. By far and away of our favorite things to do during Star Wars™ Weekends 2014. And those Jawas? They totally made the meal too! Have you been to the Star Wars™ Character Breakfast at Sci-Fi Dine In?

Guest Review -- A WDW Vacation Free of Gluten -- Day Three

This series of guest reviews comes from blog reader Jaime. Her enthusiasm, excitement and love for Disney just shine through in her trip report, and I think you'll agree when you read them. Speaking with her before her vacation, I was just so excited to hear her recap when she returned. Jaime provided a thorough trip report, so I have broken it up by days. You'll want to make sure to read them all (I'll link to them in each post)! Thank you again, Jaime, for your awesome reviews!

Thursday, November 28, 2013Happy Thanksgiving! We spent today at Hollywood Studios.  We just missed rope drop, so we need breakfast.  The only place I know that serves breakfast is Starring Rolls (it was also the only place listed in the Times Guide).  We got to the bakery case and I asked about GF.  All they had was some kind of strawberry parfait.  Not very breakfast-y… so I asked about other places.  She told me Fairfax Fare served breakfast also. The manager here tells us they can do the breakfast sandwiches on buns, but she’ll need to run and get them, so it’ll take a few minutes.  No problem.  I ordered egg, cheese, and sausage.  Ethan ordered egg and sausage.

I was excited about a breakfast sandwich – it’s been a while!   This was a longer wait than we’d been having, but not anything to complain about.  We could see the manager making our food when she got back.  Ethan was just eating his, I was enjoying mine.Cross section of the egg, cheese, and sausage – anyone know what brand of buns these were? (Sarah's note: These are GNI Brand Buns)

Lunch ended up being at Backlot Express.I wanted a hot dog and knew they had Udi’s buns here.  Our manager was Dan from WI.  He was one of the best!  He came out from behind the counter and really talked with us about our choices.  He went over the whole menu before asking if we had any thoughts or questions.  He brought the cashier into the conversation when it was time to place the order and told us he’d be back – DO NOT TAKE FOOD FROM ANYONE BUT HIM!  Wow!  We could see him in the back making everything, too.It took a very long time to get the food, but it was totally worth it for the service Dan provided.  He handed us the food with the last warning of DON’T EAT THE BAR-B-Q SAUCE FROM THE CONDIMENT MACHINE!  Flame Tree should have told me that the other day…

You know that hot dog bun has already fallen apart, don’t you?  I didn’t care; it was a hot dog ON a bun!Ethan ordered Grilled Turkey & Cheese - multigrain ciabatta with arugula and red peppers served with French fries or carrot sticks.  He said it was very good.

Thanksgiving Dinner was at the Sci-Fi. I had been thinking about this meal for months now.  I wanted the spinach-artichoke dip and chips and a specialty shake.

Photo copyright Jaime J.

The chef said I couldn’t have the spinach dip and I was so crushed, I didn’t even ask why – I don’t know if it was the dip or the chips!  (UPDATE: My daughter asked on her trip – it’s in the dip mix).  He was pushing the steak and the ribs.  The voice in my head that says things that shouldn’t be spoken out loud was noticing the price tag on the “suggested” items. We both ended up getting the Build-Your-Own Angus Chuck Burger - Flame-broiled Beef Patty with Cheddar or Swiss, crispy Bacon, Lettuce, and Vine-ripened Tomatoes; choice of Cucumber Salad or French Fries.  The hamburgers were wrapped in pizza crusts, I believe.  It was tasty and I liked the texture of the crust with the burger.  But I was really bummed about the spinach dip.

I did get a specialty shake, just not the one I planned on – tonight (for the holiday) they had a pumpkin pie shake.  It was amazing!

Photo copyright Jaime J.

And Ethan ordered a glass of wine.  (sorry, so not a wine expert here)

The movies and clips are always fun to watch.  It was a lovely Thanksgiving, but we won’t be back for a while – just not enough variety on the menu to try.

Sci-Fi Dine In -- Table Service -- Lunch/Dinner -- Hollywood Studios

*This dining experience took place in September 2013.

Sci-Fi Dine In at Disney's Hollywood Studios offers guests a chance to go back in time to 1950's drive-in theatres. Complete with tables that look like cars and screenings of old B film movies, you will definitely feel transported. The entire menu also fits the drive-in vibe and includes milkshakes, burgers, fries and all those things you'd expect from a typical drive-in. The great thing is that as a gluten free & dairy free diner, I have quite a few choices, including non-dairy milkshakes! On this particular visit, I went with my family before the DHS Villians Bash (which was crazy busy). Dining at Sci-Fi was a welcome retreat before the crowds. Before we waited to be seated, we took the time to look around that the interior design. I love the theming of this restaurant.

Need to make a phone call?!

Finally, our table was ready, and we headed in to the main dining area. I will say, be warned this place is dark. It is exactly like dining out at a drive-in. Of course, it's all in good fun and lends to the great atmosphere. And you'll be busy watching those classic films like "Attack of the 50 Foot Woman" and "The Cat Woman from Mars" (yes, these are actual film titles!). There's lots to look around at and see. You'll be greeted by a car-hop who will take your order!Once we met with our car-hop, he went to get the chef who came out and went over a few options. I will say, every time I go here the chefs always seem a little ambivalent about assisting me. It's not that they are bad, but I always feel like I need to know pretty much what I want to order. One of the things that I wanted was a non-dairy milkshake. I had a chocolate one the last time and it was good. I will say that I've been told that they don't use dedicated equipment, so they will clean everything well, but there is always the chance for potential cross contamination. I've been lucky that I personally haven't been sick, but I go in knowing that is a potential risk.

I liked my milkshake as I did the first time. It wasn't quite as soupy as the first one I had but not quite as solid as a regular milkshake is. Still to get a non-dairy milkshake out is a rarity, so I really enjoyed it.

Car hop attendant area in the back of the theatre/dining room
Totally cool atmosphere!

Up next came my entree. This was a new one for me. I ordered the Salmon BLT which came on Udi's pizza crust which had been turned into a wrap type sandwich. First up, it is hard to see in this restaurant, so I literally had to take a photo of my food to see what it looked like!

Salmon BLT with Fries

Overall, it was a good sandwich, except I would have removed one thing from it--the sweet chili sauce on it. It was a little too spicy for me. It was basically a spicy mayo but I didn't think the sandwich needed it. Actually, I would have preferred regular mayo on it. The Udi's pizza crust/flatbread was not bad. It needed to be grilled a little more or something similar in nature (it was a little tough). The salmon was cooked beautifully and was very flavorful as were the other accompaniments. The fries were nice thick cut fries which I like (and are different than the regular wimpy Disney fries). The sandwich itself was a bit messy to eat, especially in the dark!My family seemed to like their meals. The reuben, onion rings, and the burger with a hot dog & sauerkraut on it were all choices they ordered. The shakes were a bit hit!We all liked this location a lot. I think it gets a bad rap in terms of the food, but overall I found it to be much improved and a step up from a fast food burgers & fries joint. I wouldn't say it's gourmet by any means, but it's not terrible either. As a gluten free/dairy free diner, I have a fair amount of choices, which is nice. I will note that this has not been a very soy free friendly place, as you can read in a previous review with my friend who's gluten, dairy and soy free (review is HERE). Overall, I give this a 7 out of 10 for this visit. Next time I might modify my sandwich to remove the sauce or try something else. But, I really enjoy this restaurant for its atmosphere and those non-dairy milk shakes! Totally out of this world!

Sci-Fi Dine In -- Lunch -- Table Service -- Hollywood Studios

*Note: This review includes a gluten/dairy free review and a gluten/dairy/soy free review.

**This dining experience took place in summer 2011.

There's nothing like taking a nostalgic trip back in time...I love the retro themes at Disney's Hollywood Studios. Second only to 50's Prime Time Cafe is Sci-Fi Dine In. It's a little hidden restaurant nestled near Star Tours at WDW. I've only been once, back in 2004 and prior to food allergies. We loved the theming, but I've been reluctant to go back since allergies, not sure how good it would be. I wish I had more pictures to share of the inside--it looks like a 50's Drive In theatre complete with cars turned into tables. It's really dark in there though! Pictures are hard to take. However, I was able to get some food shots in, so enjoy! We were greeted by Chef Richard, who quite honestly, seemed a wee bit cranky that day. He was very helpful for me with the gluten/dairy allergies, but not quite as helpful for my friend who is gluten/dairy/soy free. Basically, if you have a soy allergy, this may not be the best restaurant for you. I was able to get most offerings, or modified offerings, but my friend was told that if he had a problem with Soy Lecithin, which he does, that he could not have anything grilled, due to the soy spray they use on the grill. They also use a soy based oil for the fryers, so even though they have a dedicated fryer, he couldn't have the french fries. My friend said in the past he was able to have both the grilled items and fries, so maybe this has changed. In addition, he didn't really have a lot of options for shakes for him. He ended up "gambling" (perhaps I would not have done and the chef told him he probably shouldn't do) with the grill and ordered a burger (which looked pretty good) and got a salad with olive oil instead of the fries. His burger looked good, nice and juicy. I don't recall if he got the mushrooms and sauteed onions with this. I know he did have the tapioca roll and bacon on it. He said it was really good. Not sure on the sick part, but at the time he seemed OK. The salad was nothing special. It was shredded lettuce, carrots, and tomatoes.

My friend's choice for gluten/dairy/and soy (sort of), burger w/salad

For my options, I could order a lot of things. I got a chocolate "milkshake" which was Tofutti (I believe from the taste) and probably soy milk or rice milk. It was a bit soupy, rather than a thick milkshake, but it was good. Nothing special, but good. Heck, it was a milkshake, so I was happy. It's nice to have something nostalgic like this. I wish they weren't so stingy on the portions of the milkshake (what happened to the spare tin with extra shake?!), especially for $4.99 at the current price.

Gluten/dairy free chocolate "milkshake" YUM!

I got a custom order for my lunch. I got a grilled chicken sandwich, with no bun, lettuce, tomato, and bacon. I also got the avocado mayonnaise that accompanies the turkey sandwich on the menu. The chef said it had egg in it--another one of those, eggs are not dairy conversations...I am always amazed by this. He gave me a large portion on the side! Good thing, I could dip fries in it..yummy! The sandwich was good. Nothing special, but good. I liked being able to mix and match from the menu. The burger was out, since I really rarely (as in once a year have a burger) eat beef. I didn't want deli turkey and the chicken dish came w/bruscetta toppings and it did not sound good to me. So, this was a great option.

My "off the menu" choice--grilled chicken, bacon, lettuce, tomato, avocado mayo, and fries

Overall, this is a basic burger and fries kinda joint. It's the ambiance that really brings you there. Food was OK, chef was a bit cranky, but overall a fun experience. Expect a wait for this place--it's almost always packed. I'd give this a 7 out of 10.
