Pizza Planet -- Dinner -- Quick Service -- Hollywood Studios

*This dining experience took place in November 2015.Note: This restaurant is currently under refurbishment as of June 2016 and set to be rethemed when it re-opens in November 2016.Pizza Planet sign Pizza Planet is a quick service restaurant in Disney's Hollywood Studios themed after the Pizza Planet restaurant in Toy Story. Offering up pizza and salads, Pizza Planet doesn't have a huge variety when it comes to options. They do have an allergy friendly menu, but it is very limited. Thankfully, if you're dairy free, they do have a soy cheese option that you can choose for your pizza.Pepperoni Pizza at Pizza PlanetOn this particular occasion, I decided to check out the pizza at Pizza Planet, since I had never been. I ended up getting a pepperoni pizza with regular cheese, as I have been re-introducing a bit of dairy back into my diet, and a Caesar side salad.I have to say that I wouldn't get this one again. Though I liked the Udi's Pizza Crust that was the base, I thought the sauce and toppings were not very good. I liked the Caesar salad but that was about it. Even my brother who got a regular gluten-filled pizza said his wasn't very good either. I'd much rather get allergy chicken tenders from ABC Commissary or a table service restaurant like Mama Melrose than order this again.I'll be curious to see how and if the restaurant changes menu options when it re-opens. The current rumor mill is suggesting it might become a Muppet themed quick service pizza restaurant. If so, I think the theming will be interesting, but I'm sure hoping they update the food options.Have you been to Pizza Planet? What did you order when you dined there?

Mama Melrose -- Lunch/Dinner -- Table Service -- Hollywood Studios

*This dining experience took place in June 2015. Mama Melrose Exterior Oh Mama Mia! Mama Melrose located at Disney's Hollywood Studios reminds me of the classic New York Italian restaurants. With great atmosphere and delicious smells coming from the wood fire, it's a wonder that it's been five years since I've eaten at Mama Melrose! After reading reviews from Alexis at Gluten Free in Orlando, I knew I needed to make a reservation to try Mama Melrose again.I love that Mama Melrose has a backstory (who knew, right?). You can read all about it on the Disney Food Blog along with non-special diets dining reviews (great for looking at photos of the restaurant). When we arrived, it was just after lunch opening (11:30 a.m.) so the restaurant was fairly quite early on. You can see from my photo, the charming lighting and rustic cozy tables.Mama Melrose InteriorAfter being seated, I was given the restaurant's allergy-friendly menu. It's amazing to see how many restaurants have already released these throughout the parks and resorts. You can see the different ones I have listed on the blog on the menus page. One thing that I've learned very quickly with the new menus is that you can and should still consult with a Disney chef. In fact, our server suggested it (she also had celiac disease so totally understood the process). They also recommend that anyone with multiple special dietary needs, like me, always check with a guest. When I dined at ABC Commissary recently, they wouldn't even take my order unless I talked to the manager. One thing to note about the menu - the Flatbreads are not listed as gluten free. They can make gluten free pizzas/flatbreads using Udi's Gluten Free crusts. I did not ask if they had dairy free cheese, but I believe that they used to.Mama Melrose Allergy Friendly MenuDairy free is always a challenge, and with the new menus they tend to be very dairy heavy. However, when I talked to Chef Will, he was great at coming up with dairy free options. The mixed green salad for example, could be made without cheese and was another great appetizer option (I actually ordered it, but they forgot to bring it out until I was halfway done through my meal so I didn't actually eat it). Most of the entrees could be modified for dairy free. The pasta with vodka sauce for instance could be made with just a marinara sauce. After some discussion, I opted for the Satlimbocca which was very dairy heavy but became modified with the removal of cheese and subbing the mashed potatoes for a gluten free pasta and a melange of sautéed vegetables. So, if you're feeling uncertain, definitely check with a chef and see what options you can come up with.GNI Rolls Mama MelroseThe restaurant also carries the GNI brand rolls, which they served with extra virgin olive oil and herbs. These rolls are great when they are well heated, but this time they were sadly very dry and crumbly. Of course, the olive oil and herbs helped make them palatable.Saltimbocca Mama Melrose As I mentioned, I didn't get my salad, but I was thrilled when I got my entree. The grilled pork was really delicious (great grill flavor) and the salty prosciutto ended up getting cut up and tossed with my pasta. The pasta was actually quite good and well cooked (not gummy or mushy at all). And I loved the vegetables sautéed in olive oil with salt, pepper, and some garlic. Chef Will used a combination of broccoflower (super delish!), broccolini, sundried tomatoes, green beans, carrots, and onions. The dish wasn't too heavy, and I felt very satisfied after eating it.Overall, I really enjoyed my meal at Mama Melrose. I wouldn't say it's the best Italian I've ever had, but it was good. Chef Will was also super nice and very accommodating with the dairy free options. My family also all loved the food they got, and everyone felt pretty satisfied with the meal overall. We'd definitely go back, and I won't wait another 5 years between visits!Have you been to Mama Melrose? What did you order when you dined there?

Guest Review -- Studio Catering Co. -- Lunch/Dinner -- Quick Service -- Hollywood Studios

This guest post comes to us from Lindsay, blogger over at Gluten Free Mom To Be. She writes about her recent trip to Disney as a gluten free diner. Lindsay's site has many gluten free resources including tips and information about gluten free pregnancy. If you're looking for Disney content, she also shares trip reviews as well as Gluten Free Guides to Disney Parks on her blog. In this guest post, Lindsay is reviewing Studio Catering Co. at Disney's Hollywood Studios!Lindsay from Gluten Free Mom to BeAlmost midway into our summer Disney vacation, the infamous Hollywood Studios Day came around. For anyone that knows my family's history with Disney vacations, we are well known for having any ailments peak on the Hollywood Studios day causing little to no time being spent in that particular park. Well, I'm happy to report that we did indeed thoroughly enjoy Hollywood Studios this trip, however we didn't quite get off Scott free when it came to our vacation sickness. For the time being though I can't wait to regale you on our adventures through Hollywood Studios. We were up nice and early to take advantage of the extra magic hours and ready for the mad dash to the Toy Story ride that ensues at park opening. With a short wait though we made it onto the Toy Story ride, which just so happens to have been in a broken car. So needless to say we were unlucky or lucky enough to be able to ride the Toy Story ride twice in a row first thing in the morning, the first time just for the ride itself and the second for the carnival game fun too.As soon as our Toy Story adventure had ended, we headed over for the group of Tower of Terror riders to use their fastpasses. Although the system for Fastpass+ is a bit chaotic since it's all bright, shiny, and new, I have to say it is quite nice to pre-plan a few of your desired attractions before you even arrive for your vacation.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disney%27s_Hollywood_StudiosAfter a short wait with their fastpasses, our family members were out and ready to join us for some more Hollywood Studios fun. We stopped in for a few character meet and greets and then made our way over to snag some passes for the Frozen sing-a-long that afternoon. And finally it was time for us to head over and catch the Disney Junior show, you know the infamous show that we missed last vacation due to my little one's impromptu trip to the Urgent Care center. And let me just say, it was definitely worth the wait, she just loved each and every part of the show including her favorite stars on the stage, the interactive bubbles and streamers coming down from the ceiling, and the live music and dancing all around her, all of which is right up my little one's alley.By the time we had finished with the Disney Junior show it was nearing lunch time and we decided to pop over to the Studio Catering Co. for an early lunch to avoid a little bit of the craziness that never fails to appear at the peak lunch hour. I was third in line at my register and first to place an allergy order with the manager.I knew that the Studio Catering Co. was home to Udi's white sandwich bread, hence making their sandwiches, wraps, and salads all available to the gluten free diner. With a little confirmation from the manager that this was the case, I was so excited that I could choose any sandwich off of their menu. They offer a Sloppy Joe, a Spicy Buffalo Chicken Sandwich, a Chicken Caesar Wrap, a Toasted Tuscan Deli sandwich, Grilled Vegetable Sandwich, Greek Salad, and a Pressed Turkey Club.Disney Summer 2014 (20)For me, the Toasted Tuscan Deli sandwich caught my eye which has smoked ham, salami, pepperoni, provolone, pesto-marinated vine ripened tomatoes, and caesar dressing. The manager assured me that everything on here was completely gluten free so I ordered the sandwich as is but without the caesar dressing, which can be a little too fishy for me at times. After ordering my little one's kids meal and my husband's sandwich, my ticket went through and the wait began. It's not completely unusual to wait a bit longer for allergy orders at Disney's quick service locations so I wasn't surprised when the manager forewarned me that the wait could be about 15 minutes. While our little girl slept, my husband switched places up at the counter with me while I stood watch with the stroller and sleeping baby. True to the manager's word, the wait definitely was around 15 minutes or so but completely worth it. As the people began to trickle into the Studio Catering Co. and the lines began to grow, my husband came around the corner with the manager beside him carrying my allergy free tray of food.Disney Summer 2014 (24)The sandwich looked DELICIOUS! It was held perfectly intact, thanks to the Udi's gluten free bread, and had layers of Italian yumminess inside, oh yeah and it was accompanied by a generous side of Disney's signature fries. The gluten free bread was lightly toasted with warmed meats, tomatoes, and melted cheese layered inside. The flavors were perfectly combined and would probably have been accented excellently with the caesar dressing, I just like to steer away from caesar dressings. After the first bite, I knew I had found my new favorite Hollywood Studios lunch location. I literally devoured this sandwich, partially because my little one was sleeping and I actually was able to enjoy my hot sandwich hot but mainly because it was just that good. The fries on the side were of course delicious but by far the star of the plate was the sandwich. To go along with my meal, the manager gave me some Enjoy Life Chocolate Chip Cookies which I tossed in our bag for later since there was no room left for any more food after that sandwich. As we finished our lunches, our little girl woke up to enjoy hers. A short while later, with full bellies and some of us being freshly rested, we were off to enjoy the rest of our day in Hollywood Studios.First up was our last fastpass for another round on the Toy Story ride. Next, our show time had rolled around for the Frozen sing-a-long which our little girl LOVED! With some live performers, appearances by Elsa, Anna, and Kristoff, and some scenes and songs from the movie, not to mention some much needed air conditioning for an extended period of time, it was the perfect early afternoon treat for our whole group. Finally, we stopped into the Frozen wonderland where we got to play in a little snow and make our very own Olaf, watch some ice skating, and even get a Mickey pretzel and a bonus Elsa and Anna cookie for our little princess (neither of which were gluten free, tear). Good thing we snagged some treats because while we were enjoying the winter wonderland inside, outside was the signature Orlando downpour. Soon enough the storm had let up and after donning ponchos we trudged through the puddles, grabbed the stroller, and were on our way to see what our third night in Disney World would bring. All together we had a great lunch at Hollywood Studios' Studio Catering Co.. I've already added this location to my itinerary for our next vacation, whenever that may be, and cannot wait to either indulge in the sandwich which I enjoyed this time or maybe try something new. One thing I'd like to recommend though would be to arrange an early lunch here to avoid the crowds and get first dibs on the manager for your allergy order.Have A Magical Day, Lindsay

Star Wars Character Breakfast at Sci-Fi Dine-In 2014 -- Table Service -- Hollywood Studios

*This dining experience took place in June 2014.Note: The Star Wars™ Dine-In Galactic Breakfast is a special character dining experience that took place during the 2014 Star Wars™ Weekends.Star Wars Galactic Dine-InThis year's Star Wars™ Weekends offered several new meal experiences: Star Wars™ Dine-In Galactic Breakfast and Jedi Mickey’s Star Wars™ Dine at Hollywood and Vine. Of course, as soon as I heard the announcement about these two meals, I had to make sure to go to both of them. They sounded like awesome events and as a Star Wars™ fan, they were totally up my alley. My family and I attended the Jedi Mickey’s Star Wars™ Dine at Hollywood and Vine during the first Star Wars™ Weekends in May and had a great time. I was pleased to see the special diets offerings available and really enjoyed the experience. We had heard tons of buzz about the character breakfast at Sci-Fi Dine In and were really excited to check it out! First up, I have to say that this was a very popular breakfast. When we got there during our visit at 8:30 a.m. it was pretty packed. Our reservation wasn't until 9:10 a.m. but we checked in and figured we'd just hang out and take in the atmosphere (we'd already rode Star Tours at 8 a.m. so bonus for us. Nothing says Star Wars™ Weekends like riding Star Tours early on in the day!). Imagine our surprise when we got called about 10 minutes later. Talk about going light speed to our breakfast! Before our breakfast, we took a minute to pose with Darth Vader and Boba Fett. My family were wearing Rebel Spy t-shirts which did NOT make Darth Vader happy. And Boba Fett decided he wasn't too thrilled with me either. The reactions they gave us were priceless. Then it was off to the Sci-Fi Dine In dining area where we took in the sights and transformation which suited the character meal really well. Sci-Fi Dine In Star Wars WeekendsOn the screen, you got to watch Star Wars clips and even the special 1978 Christmas Special. Talk about awesome and corny all at the same time.  Our server greeted us and the very first thing she asked was, "Does anybody have an allergy or special dietary need." This was great because they made sure to ask right away. She took our drink orders and then got the chef while we looked over the menus and check out our surroundings.Sci Fi Dine InBreakfast is a fixed price and includes a plate of breakfast pastries per guest, a choice of fruit & yogurt with granola or just fruit, an entree, and drinks of your choice. There's also a special dessert surprise, but more on that later...The chef greeted me with a plate of breakfast pastries knowing that I couldn't have gluten or dairy. I have to say, it's really hard to see what you're getting on your plate, so taking a picture was about the only way I could identify my treats. I got an Udi's blueberry muffin and chocolate chip muffin, and a Kinnikinnick cinnamon sugar donut. All things I really enjoy! Breakfast Pastries at Sci Fi Dine In during Star Wars WeekendsI was also served fresh fruit with some cute Star Wars inspired cut-outs. Yoda as melon...adorable! If your'e like me and not a melon fan...beware. The fruit salad is mostly honeydew and other melons. Not really my most favorite. I could go for grapes, pineapple and strawberries, but as with most fruit cups, they weren't too plentiful. Fruit Salad at Sci-Fi Dine In during Star Wars WeekendsAnother great feature of the clips is that they show Star Wars™ Weekends specific things, like weekend host James Arnold Taylor and even information about characters walking around. It was all perfectly themed, and I have to say really made the meal experience feel special. Sci Fi Dine In during Star Wars WeekendsFor my entree, I ordered the Tatooine Sunrise which included bacon, sausage (which I exchanged for extra bacon), scrambled eggs, and breakfast potatoes. The potatoes that normally come with it contain dairy, so I was given garlic roasted fingerling potatoes. And they were delicious! Very well seasoned and cooked. The rest of the meal was good. I wouldn't say anything special but well cooked and hearty. Enough to feed a Wookie, that's for sure. Tatooine Sunrise at Sci Fi Dine In during Star Wars WeekendsAnd speaking of more food...I asked if there were any other options available to me for gluten free and dairy free breakfast. They did carry Van's waffles, which I opted to skip. I like Van's but they aren't the same as my beloved allergy Mickey waffles. I did however, order a side of the shrimp that accompanies the shrimp and grits. And these were a yummy and delicious add on to my meal!  Side of Shrimp at Sci Fi Dine in during Star Wars WeekendsThroughout our meal, we were treated to Star Wars™ music and film clips and also got to meet lots of Star Wars™ characters. One caveat, lighting in Sci-Fi Dine In can be a challenge. My mom got a shot of me and Greedo but the flash wasn't on. The photo turned out pretty dark, which I had originally posted here, but thanks to reader Ron G., who worked some Disney pixie dust on it, it looks awesome! (Thanks, Ron!!)Sarah with Greedo at Sci Fi Dine In Star Wars WeekendsStormtroopers were around a lot. As I said quite frequently to them, "This is not the breakfast you are looking for!" Of course, they really got into things and lots of stormtrooper hijinks ensued!  Stormtrooper at Sci Fi Dine In during Star Wars WeekendsOnce we finished our meal, we were also treated to a special dessert. Another nice touch was that this cast member also asked about special dietary needs. Unfortunately, the dessert contained dairy (but it was gluten free!). I was able to get a bowl of fresh strawberries. My family did like the dessert, it seems like it was a pudding/custard of some type with pop rock type fruit in them. Talk about a galactic treat!  Sci Fi Dine In Dessert Surprise during Star Wars WeekendsJawas sign at Sci Fi Dine In during Star Wars WeekendsPerhaps my most favorite thing about the character breakfast were the Jawas. Omigosh. Were these guys adorable! They roamed the character breakfast and yes, if you had something shiny and interesting, they were into trading with you. My family decided to see what would entice the Jawas and they sure do like Star Wars™ bling. My stepdad traded them a Magic Band Star Wars™ gadget, and they were pretty thrilled. Jawa at Sci Fi Dine in during Star Wars WeekendsOne thing is that they don't talk, and you have to translate what they say by their gestures. It took me entirely too long to figure out this Jawa needed to go get the other Jawa's trading pouch. Yep, clearly I needed C3P0 because I do not speak Jawa! When they returned, they made the trade (a shiny limited edition cast member pin) and a spoon. Because apparently, I needed a spoon. Thanks Jawas!  Spoon from the Jawas at Sci Fi Dine In During Star Wars WeekendsOverall, I had a fabulous time at the breakfast. In fact, the whole family thought out of the two character meals this was by far and away our favorite. It wasn't cheap by any means at nearly $50 but for a once a year experience, we would definitely do it again. It had nice gluten free and dairy free meal options, and the food was quite good too. I give this Star Wars™ character meal a solid 8 out of 10. By far and away of our favorite things to do during Star Wars™ Weekends 2014. And those Jawas? They totally made the meal too! Have you been to the Star Wars™ Character Breakfast at Sci-Fi Dine In?

ABC Commissary -- Lunch/Dinner -- Quick Service -- Hollywood Studios

*This dining experience took place in May 2014.Hurray for Hollywood! ABC Commissary is the dining location to the stars...or at least the stars when they are on the movie set. This quick service location is my go-to restaurant for allergy chicken tenders while in Hollywood Studios. The managers are always excellent at this location, and I truly feel like a celebrity when I make my routine chicken tender order. On this particular visit, I stopped by ABC Commissary for a quick bite to eat before we headed to the Star Wars character dinner at Hollywood & Vine. We didn't want to eat to much throughout the day after having a really hearty breakfast at Kouzzina and knowing that we would have a huge dinner. When I arrived at the cashier station, I told the CM that I has special dietary needs. When the manager arrived, I asked for the allergy chicken tenders and french fries. One thing that is interesting about this location is that they almost always ask if this is a health related request (i.e. Celiac Disease, non-celiac gluten sensitivity, or allergy) or if this is a dietary preference. I do appreciate that they are very cognizant of health related issues that might require a gluten free diet. Once ordered, I was given a pager and told that the pager works throughout the perimeter of the restaurant. We popped by the benches near the bathroom - this is a great spot to charge up your phone, as there are outlets by the phone booths and under the benches. About 8-10 minutes later, my chicken tenders were ready!Allergy Chicken Tenders ABC CommissaryAnd oh how delicious these are, especially when piping hot! It's funny how my family remarks how much they like these just about every time we order them and split them. Yep, non-gluten free & allergy free folks like them too. They are just plain delicious. I have to say that ABC Commissary continues to be one of my favorite locations for allergy chicken tenders. You can find a full list of locations (including my favorite place, Columbia Harbour House) here on the site. Overall, I give this review a solid 8 out of 10. Great allergy chicken tenders, special diets knowledge, and service. Have you been to ABC Commissary? What do you order when you go to this quick service location?
